Even if the laptop is assembled in Japan, there is most likely a large number of parts in it made in China. Same with everything else. Cheap plastic spatulas are made in China. So are the cases. Everything from Wal-mart is made in China. Like I said, you're going to be supporting China in some fashion or another. I realize that China gets support from anyway, but I try to limit my purchase of chinese goods.
It is very hard to find something thats a not made in china b not a piece of crap at least electronics wise I would rather see it in Taiwan, Mexico, or somwhere in Europe or South America than see it go to China. I used to have the same mentality on China produced goods, but as more and more companies decide to have their manufacturing done there, it's nearly impossible to avoid.
What really matters is their quality control, and even though many of my favorite electronic brands have their stuff made in China or wherever else now, I haven't seen any decrease in the quality of the goods that I purchase, because the companies that I like wouldn't let their products devolve into crap like that.
